The Spaceship SellerHub domain marketplace has officially revised its commission structure, increasing its standard transaction fee from 5% to 10%.
Earlier this week, the platform briefly tested a model where buyers were charged a 5% fee in addition to the 5% commission paid by sellers. However, that experiment has now been withdrawn.
According to comments shared on X by Richard Kirkendall, founder of Namecheap and Chief of Strategy & Innovation at the company that owns Spaceship, the buyer-side fee was a short-term test. While the test reportedly did not significantly affect transaction volumes, the company chose not to proceed with that structure.
What Has Changed
-
Standard commission on SellerHub transactions is now 10%
-
The earlier 5% + 5% buyer/seller split model has been rolled back
-
Buyers and sellers may negotiate who ultimately bears the commission
-
Checkout and self-serve links will continue to operate at a 5% commission
This effectively doubles the commission rate for standard marketplace transactions compared to earlier in the week.
What It Means for Domain Investors
Commission structures directly impact seller margins and buyer pricing strategies. A 10% fee places Spaceship more in line with other established domain marketplaces, though it may influence how sellers price their domains.
The flexibility allowing parties to negotiate who pays the commission introduces room for deal structuring, especially in high-value transactions.
For domain investors, this shift reinforces the importance of understanding platform economics before listing premium assets.
